The Jemison Van de Graaff Mansion

When we were visiting our friend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama she took us to this historic house in town. The Jemison Van de Graaff Mansion was finished in 1862. Know you can go there and have a guided tour of the house. There is a tip jar in the front for any contribution that you might want to make. The historian that took us throughout the house was amazing and very knowledgeable. I have to admit that I actually learnt a lot general things from the time period that I did not know. The house was a planters house so as you can imagine it was huge. “This included an elaborate plumbing system which featured running water, flush toilets, a hot water boiler, and a copper bathtub. This was some of the earliest modern plumbing in the state. The property also had its own coal gas plant, which provided the mansion with gas lighting and fueled a kitchen stove.” Exert from Wikipedia. The way the air circulation system worked also amazed me. The windows and the whole building structure was designed for the optimal circulation.

If you are ever in Tuscaloosa. Give it a look.
